Trekking a Siena e Toscana con 43° Parallelo

Hiking to Conventaccio - The Bad Monastery

This beautiful loop winds inside the Basso Merse Nature Reserve, in one of the most pristine and isolated part of the province of Siena. The main attraction of the day are the amazing ruins of Montespecchio Hermitage, known as "the bad monastery". The ruins remind exotic temples wrapped by the forest, but the Tuscan evidence is revealed by the typical bi-colored black and white stones used in the building. We will also visit the entrance of an abandoned copper mine arriving in the bottom of the valley of a nice stream, the Crevolone. Hence in summertime we will walk for a while in and out the river bed before getting back to the cars. In colder seasons we will reach instead the little and charming village of Olivello before closing the loop.
